Italia, Andare a Piedi

The Italian phrase andare a piedi translates to to go on foot. Hopefully you are here because you are going on foot in Italy with Spanish Steps!

Italy Guidebooks
Have Book, Will Travel

Start off with a good map, a guidebook, and a pocket-sized phrase book.

  1. A Few Good Maps. Tuck away a folded map like the Michelin Central Italy map or the National Geographic Italy map.
  2. Guidebook. You can’t go wrong with the Rick Steves Italy Guidebook, Rick Steves Florence & Tuscany Guidebook, and Rick Steves Rome Guidebook. I like to tear sections out and bring only what I need (this was a tip from Rick).
  3. Italian Phrase Book. Rick Steves Italian Phrase Book is truly pocket size at 4.05 x 0.85 x 5.55 inches. Alternatively, check out the Eyewitness Travel Phrase Book which comes with a free audio app.

What Else to See

If you have traveled to Italy for a Spanish Steps trip, you might like to visit the surrounding areas before or after your hike. The Assisi hike is in the Umbria region, and the Rome hike covers Tuscany and Lazio regions. I’ve annotated a map to give you a view of what is around.

Andare a Piedi

In this annotated map, I show an approximate route for the Rome and Assisi hikes (don’t worry, the actual routes are not straight lines 😀).

Andare a Piedi

Personally, I like to fly into Milan and then head up to the Dolomites in the Italian Alps. Here is how I arranged that trip.

  • Part 1: Milan to Lake Como. This was a beautiful and scenic drive that deserves its own blog post. I’ll add that here when it is ready.
  • Part 2: Lake Como to the Dolomites. See Scenic Drives in Italy: Italian Alps by car and Scenic Italy: Italian Alps by cable for the driving route and a suggestion of where to stay in the Dolomites.
  • Part 3: Dolomites to Venice. This was a beautiful and scenic drive that deserves its own blog post. I’ll add that here when it is ready.
  • Part 4: Venice to Florence. There is a lot to do in Florence, and if it on your itinerary, be sure to check out my blog post on Florence.
