Rural France: Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse

Le Sappey-En-Chartreuse

We stayed in the quiet little town of Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse. Rural and off the beaten path, the B&B we stayed in had chickens, roosters, geese, rabbits, a cat and at that time a dog that was in the process of birthing her litter. We could fast-track the letting go of work here for sure. I wish we had more time here because this place is worth a multiple day stay! We explored the tiny town and almost missed the grocery store because it’s smaller than a 7-11!  Then, we took a drive out to Fort du Saint-Eynard.

Fort du Saint-Eynard

This military fort was built in 1870 and has panoramic views to Grenoble. Fort du Saint-Eynard is one of seven forts making up the fortified belt of Grenoble.

Chalet du Charmant Som

Our host suggested this hike to what she calls a magical place. A steep climb in thin air gets the heart pumping fast. But at the summit, the views are extraordinary. We may have spotted Mount Blanc in the distance before the clouds hid it away. We struck up a conversation with a friendly local on the descent and she was kind enough to fill in details we were missing about the hike and the local cuisine. She recommended we buy some of the cheese from the Fromagerie at the trailhead… the last one of it’s kind making cheese in the place where the cows are being milked.
