Rome on a Friday

Carvaggi-no

Been in Rome for a day and a half now. We are 0 for 3 getting a look at Caravaggios. First try was at the Basilica Parrocchiale di Santa Maria del Popolo (Crucifixion of St. Peter) which is closed for renovations. Today, we walked to San Luigi dei Francesi (The Calling of St Matthew) but it was closed for lunch. Never fear, we had tickets to Borghese Gallery at 5pm … our guide was a no show!

These were the Caravaggio paintings we hoped to see;

  • John the Baptist.
  • Saint Jerome Writing.
  • Boy with a Basket of Fruit.
  • Young Sick Bacchus.
  • David with the Head of Goliath.
  • Portrait of Pope Paul V.
  • Madonna of the Palafrenieri.
  • The Lute Player.

We also went by the Pantheon and it was a total zoo. Then we decided to just jump right in and head to Trevi fountain while eating gelato! That was a nice experience actually.

St Peter Basilica Tour

We started the day with a tour of the basilica. And how weird is it that we ran into one of our neighbors… who literally lives 4 houses from us! We were getting our pilgrim certificate when she saw us!

Next plans

On Saturday we are going to Palazzo Doria Pamphilj I’m the morning and attempt #2 for the Borghese.
