Tavira Day

If it felt like Tavira Day was more than one day, it is because it was. The summer solstice celebrations focus on two things: the popular saints (Santos Populares) and the day of the city (Dia da Cidade). In Tavira, the saint celebrate was São João (St. John). While Tavira Day is on June 24, evening festivities started on June 21st.

Festivities

The riverfront was decorated in colorful paper streamers. I got up early one morning and made a 💎 this video when few people were around. In the evenings, people gathered to listen to music, eat, drink and dance. Tavira Day started with a 💎 firework show at midnight.

Concert

Tavira Day was a pretty quite day, and people rested up for the big concert that night. Calema was playing, and Nossa Dança is my current favorite song of theirs. The concert started at 10pm and there were no seats, everyone was either standing or dancing.

Adventure Day

The first rule of adventure day is that you let the adventure choose. We were headed to the most south-west point of Portugal, and decided to put on GPS navigation when we got close. Well, we weren’t paying attention and realized we missed our turn. But seeing that we were only 14km from Aljezur, we continued onward. This town had a center, a main church and a castle – the perfect trio! We happened to be there on Corpo de Deus and the church had created a beautiful flower carpet.

Re-routing to Sagres, we arrived on a rather calm and clear day. The views were amazing and with little wind, we still didn’t brave the walk up to the edge of the cliffs. It is beautiful here and I simply couldn’t capture it with my camera. There is also a hotdog stand here.

While it was tempting to just grab a hotdog, we chose to try a nearby highly rated restaurant call Three Little Birds. This was probably the best hamburger I have ever had.

With more rugged cliff sides to see, we headed toward Sagres castle which was close due to a worker strike. But we got these pictures instead. I am behind on writing and already have another Adventure Day in the books — look for it in the next post.

Pam I Am

I have met many Pams since being here. In the regular set of friends, the other Pam is called Pam 2. I feel special and when one person insisted that I’m Pam 1, I said “yes but the 1 is silent.”

It’s Tomato Season

So much produce from our former landlord that I have enough to set up a side business. Not wanting any to go to waste, I bring them to events like the weirdo I am. Sometimes I feel a little like Andy on Shawshank Redemption, bringing out just enough not to be totally noticeable. Spoiler alert: since I am behind on writing my blog, I have been to my former landlord’s house again and returned with 10 more huge tomatoes and a large pile of green beans.

Cruz Vermelha

This week we onboarded as volunteers at the Cruz Vermelha (The Red Cross). It feels very similar to working at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop. We will either work in the Loja (the store) or the warehouse.
