Saturdays are market days. It is when the local farmers and merchants bring their products into the Mercado. A few weeks ago, our Portuguese language tutor, Ana, took us the market to teach us how to shop. She pointed out the sparsely populated stalls along the perimeter only occupied on Saturday, and to shop there is to support local merchants.
Today we were on our own, but soon ran into Ana at stall #19, and again at Talho Luis. We spent 24.10€, and we got so much (always bring cash to the market).
Stalls in the Mercado
- Stall #19 (Luz de Tavira): 6 tomatoes, 2 sweet potatoes, 2 heads of lettuce, broccoli, 2 guava. 4.50€
- Stall #5 (Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo): This man has the best olives. 1.50€
- Stall #295 (Sandra from Luz de Tavira): She and her dad run this stand. We got 1 large onion, 3 potatoes, 4 oranges, green onion, a handful of basil. 3.50€.
Shops in the Mercado
- Talho Luis: The word talho translates to butcher, and there are many butcher shops along the mercado. Ana says Talho Luis is the best. We got 4 chicken kabobs, and 1 turkey kabob for 12.50€.
- Charcutaria Reis. Alongside the talho shops is a cheese and bread shop. We bought a loaf of fresh bread for 2.10€.
In the middle are the fish stalls. We aren’t ready for fish buying yet, but Ana showed us how to order fish descaled and deboned. One unique thing about today was the marching band winding their way through the market. I captured a bit of it in this 💎 highlight video.
